There are several reasons for the development of red+blue LED luminaires. First, red LEDs are the most efficient, meaning they are very efficient at converting electricity into photons.
Second, red light is thought to be the most efficient way to drive photosynthesis, which is true instantaneously, but over time we are learning that this is not necessarily true. Third, many plants grow slender only under red, so blue is added to increase compactness and create a more typical or sometimes shorter plant. The main disadvantage of red+blue LED fixtures is the potential impact on people, not on plants.
